Hey, everybody! I’m going on a road trip! Won’t you come along for the ride?
Some friends of mine are moving out to the West Coast, and they needed a volunteer to drive a car out there for them. It’s a great opportunity to visit parts of the USA I’ve never seen, and I think it’s pretty cool of them to let me spend extra time exploring along the way. A good, long road trip is a rite of passage for wayward travelers like us, and I’m excited to finally be taking one myself.
The plan is to leave Champaign, IL and end up in San Francisco, CA. Here’s the route I’m taking.
Badlands National Park, SD
My first stop is the Badlands where I’ll start off with some light hiking. Then I’ll drive the mountain road across the entire park and spend two nights roaming the backcountry and checking out the wildlife.
Yellowstone National Park, WY
This is the main stop on my trip where I’ll be doing a ton of hiking and even learning to fly fish! I’m really looking forward to exploring the Mammoth Hot Springs area and hiking up some low mountains. Part of me hopes I don’t encounter a grizzly… but another part of me really wants to see one.
I’m visiting a friend I met on my trip to Havasu Falls! I think it’ll be pretty neat to run up to the northwest corner of the country for a few days. From there I’ll take the Pacific Coast Highway all the way until the end of my trip.
Coronado Shores, OR
Somewhere around here I’ll be looking for a place to camp on the beach so I can watch the solar eclipse on August 21. Exciting!
San Francisco, CA
I’ll be spending two weeks in San Francisco to finish off my trip. Food, beaches, and surfing await!
Bonus – Maui, HI
After the road trip is done, I’ll be in Maui for a few months! I found a sweet gig on a fruit orchard, and I can’t wait to tell you about it when I get there.
